Tumblr!
Posted by Roy Tomeij | Filed under Miscellaneous
I just started my own Tumblr log, which will mainly have illustrated entries. Probably easier to keep that one active, so make sure to check it out. Some noteworthy stuff over there :)
Update July 20, 2010: And the Tumblr blog has also died a silent death. Will write a new post about the awesome “Sick Beard” shortly, to replace the outdated post on automated TV-series downloads.
The perfect home theater setup with automated downloads
Posted by Roy Tomeij | Filed under Miscellaneous, Software
A friend of mine asked me to write about my (near perfect) home theater setup, including the automated downloading of new episodes of TV series. This post is a first attempt, and I will probably revise it numerous times in the future.
Please note that downloading (not distributing) TV series for personal use is legal in my jurisdiction.
My setup involves an HD-Ready TV (720p), Mac Mini, Harman/Kardon 5.1 receiver, SABnzbd+, Eweka, XBMC, MyTvNZB, TheTvDB & more. I will go over it in the following chapters:
- hardware & connection
- automated downloading
- organizing & watching
I assume you already know about usenet, NZB files, etc. If not, start googling. Read the rest of this entry »
Companies that don’t get it: Burger King
Posted by Roy Tomeij | Filed under Miscellaneous
A while ago I wanted to know what time a nearby Burger King closes. What’s the easiest way to get that task done when on the train? Right, getting your iPhone and browsing to burgerking.nl (since I’m in The Netherlands).
To my surprise I got this:

Which translates to: “Nothing to see here. At least, not without the Flash 8 Plugin and JavaScript enabled. But, you can install the needed plugin faster than the time it takes to prepare a WHOPPER®. Except for maybe the TRIPPLE WHOPPER®. But then again, that’s a really huge Burger.” Read the rest of this entry »
Vodafone Mobile Connect on OSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard) with an E3730 data card
Posted by Roy Tomeij | Filed under Software
After trying numerous “solutions”, I finally managed to get my Vodafone “express data card” (the E3730 by Option) to work on OSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard), together with Vodafone’s “Mobile Connect” software.
I don’t know if this works with all versions of Mobile Connect, but at least it did with this one: Vodafone Mobile Connect 2.11.04.00. After installing the Mobile Connect software (if you don’t have it yet), the trick is to “update” the drivers for the data card to the OSX 10.4 (Tiger) version. For this you need to download the Option drivers (Option forgot to add some extensions, so this goes to the proper zip I made after fixing them).
Simply open the dmg, install the 10.4 drivers and you’re done (or at least: I was).
PS: NO thanks to the Vodafone help desk, which doesn’t know sh*t and has been keeping me and numerous others in the blind since Snow Leopard was released. Spend a few $ on the developer release next time guys!
Amateur chefs, get this book!
Posted by Roy Tomeij | Filed under Book, Cooking
I’m (of course) talking about “Food” by Christian Teubner. But to start with the downside: it’s only available second hand. Amazon doesn’t feature it at all, and others seem to offer no new copies.
Although this post is categorized as “book” and “cooking”, it’s by no means a cookbook: the (well over-sized) 336 pages don’t have one single recipe on them. But as you probably know, you can’t cook a decent meal if you don’t know your ingredients. And that’s why this book covers probably all ingredients you will ever use, with full colour pictures and a short description for all of them. Read the rest of this entry »
