iPhone running 2.0 now

Yesterday evening/night I updated my first generation iPhone to run the 2.0 firmware. I don’t see the benefits of getting a 3G iPhone yet (apart from the 3G speed, which for a lot of people still is terribly slow), but running 2.0 does have its advantages. Being able to use both the english and dutch language assistance when typing for instance, localization and getting third party applications from the AppStore. One of the best things (potentially) is MobileMe, which is a cloud you sync your changes to and have them pushed towards your other devices. I use it for synching my iCal and Address Book, which works like a charm. No more having it connected to the computer and hitting “sync” in iTunes numerous times a day. Read the rest of this entry »

New domain: tomeij.me

Today I decided to run this blog on a separate domain, since I use the tomeij.net domain for my holding (not actively) and want to keep this personal thing somewhat apart from that. With the new .me extension I though tomeij.me would be nice. Registered it, changed some virtual host configs and here we are.

US Secret Service

I just finished some entertaining books about the US Secret Service, its history and some (possibly outdated) information on how it operates. The first book I read was written by Philip H. Melanson (”The Secret Service: The Hidden History of an Engimatic Agency“) and deals mainly with the history of the USSS, the political climate it has to operate in and the people behind the agency. It features some anecdotes, but they are largely the same as those in the second book (even in wording). Since Joseph Petro, author of “Standing Next to History: An Agent’s Life Inside the Secret Service” and former secret agent, is one of the few agents who will speak about his time in the service. The downside to this is that there’s no way to verify Petro’s claims and that he could easily leave out the “dirty” stuff. Which he did, since his book for 99% consists out of fun and adventures, portraying former president Reagan as being close to a saint (Petro was on Reagan’s security detail als lead agent). Chocolate cookies!

I just made some delicious chewy chocolate cookies, kind of like the chocolate cookies at Subway but more dense (and thus more chewy). The recipe is from my new “Martha Stewart’s Cookies” cookbook, but you can also find the recipe on her website.

These are the first cookies I made based on a recipe in this cookbook (and the first cookies I made since childhood), but I’m pretty sure more will follow. The book has great, easy to do recipes and info on utensils, gift wrapping cookies, etc. The index is just a collection of photo’s of the finished product, grouped in categories like “soft & chewy” (my chocolate cookies), “crumbly & sandy” and “crunchy & nutty”. It’s a great way to try out new recipes by making a selection based on “what looks delicious”. Each recipe comes with a large picture of the finished product (whether it’s a cookie, brownie or something else) and an indication for how long you can store it before it goes wrong.

I’m going to buy me some measuring cups and spoons, because converting the volumes in US recipes to liters all the time is just annoying. If you know where to get them in The Netherlands, let me know. They need to be US size, so 0.236 liter in a cup.

Trying to blog yet again

I’ve tried blogging several times before, and after a week or so I always stop writing. Busy with other things, too little time or no inspiration. That doesn’t stop me from trying again though… So here it is: my new and shiny weblog. Don’t expect anything fancy and/or regular updates.
