Companies that don’t get it: Burger King

A while ago I wanted to know what time a nearby Burger King closes. What’s the easiest way to get that task done when on the train? Right, getting your iPhone and browsing to burgerking.nl (since I’m in The Netherlands).

To my surprise I got this:

Burger King notice

Which translates to: “Nothing to see here. At least, not without the Flash 8 Plugin and JavaScript enabled. But, you can install the needed plugin faster than the time it takes to prepare a WHOPPER®. Except for maybe the TRIPPLE WHOPPER®. But then again, that’s a really huge Burger.”

This didn’t make sense to me. First, why would you want to make a website consisting solely of a Flash animation. Inaccessible by alternative user agents, such as screen readers, Google and… my iPhone! So I decided to ask Burger King why they made this decision. Their response was just insane…

“The Burger King website has been programmed in Flash. At the time about 90% of all mobile phones have trouble displaying Flash websites. Thus the problem isn’t with our site, but with the mobile Internet technology.” (translated from Dutch)

Excuse me? You knowingly build a website which is inaccessible by 90% of all mobile devices and at least the same percentage of all other alternative user agents (as in: not “normal” web browsers), and it’s not your fault?

Dear Burger King: you don’t get it.

There’s also acid poison in our Burgers. But the problem lies not with our burgers, it’s with the human digestion system.
